Behavioral Modification Matters Most

Many of us seek ways to improve our lives.  When it comes to fitness, we need to understand that our health, our bodies are the net sum of what we do with them and how we treat those complex machines.  Granted, there are certainly genetic limitations and other factors that contribute to help or to hinder in those endeavors. However, within those fixed elements, we are the result of our actions.  We don’t all begin from the same starting point and not all of those elements are under our control, so let’s focus on those things that are.

Changing the Components

You can certainly change components and continue to behave in a similar way. Let’s say you swap out your Ben & Jerry’s with your homemade protein ice cream. That might be changing a component but behaving the same way. Still, being aware of what that means, crafting your own foods, and building them into your routine is a significant behavioral change.

Aligning Behaviors with Goals

That is a long way of saying that the only way to improve your health is by changing what it is that you do. So behavioral modification is critical to improving health. That is, because your machine will respond to how you treat it (read The Premise of “Strength for Life”). How you feed, exercise, sleep, think, and believe is what creates your outcomes. All of those things are your behaviors, and aligning your behaviors with your health goals is what makes the difference. (read Are you “Walking Yourself?”)
